Description

The Rockets n’ Robots ensemble includes two quilts and one pillowcase. A twin bed quilt is 50 “ x 78”, and the wallhanging/sofa quilt
is 66” x 53”. The pillowcase finished size fits a standard pillowcase.
Rockets n’ Robots was inspired by the retro metal robots and rocketships that my husband played with as a young boy. This
quilt is whimsical yet desirable for boys of any age. Easy raw-edge fusible machine appliqué makes the quilt quick and easy.
I always begin with a focus fabric, which I use to choose the additional fabrics for the quilt. The black and white canvas of the
quilt lends itself to using any color variety or intensity. Have fun choosing fabrics for this quilt and making a quilt worthy to be
an instant heirloom. Details for machine quilting are added in the pattern instructions for both quilts. Add colored Swarovski™
crystals to your Rockets n’ Robots for realistic bling!

You will need the following materials:

Twin Bed Quilt
• 1 1/2 yards of white with black print background fabric
• 2 yards of a colorful focus fabric for sashing and
binding
• 2 yards of fabric border fabric
• A wild assortment of bight monochromatic prints for
the rockets and robots. Use the focus fabric to choose
your own colors. You will need several ¼ yard pieces or
fat quarters.
• 6 yards of backing fabric
• 1 3/4 yards of Hobbs Heirloom 80% cotton/20% poly
batting

For One Standard Pillowcase
• Fabric for pillowcase 60” x 19 1/2” (I used the leftover
fabric from the backing of the quilt for the pillowcase)
• 1/2 yard for pillowcase wrapper backing
• 1/4 yard for wrapper edging
• 1 fat quarter of background fabric for the robot head
• 1 fat quarter for the robot head
• Additional scraps from above quilt fabrics for rest of the
robot
• 2 yards of large rickrack

Wallhanging/Sofa Quilt
• 1 1/2 yards of white with black print background fabric
• 2 yards of a colorful focus fabric for sashing and
binding
• 1 yard of border fabric
• A wild assortment of bight monochromatic prints for
the Rockets and Robots. Use the Focus fabric to pick
the colors. You will need several ¼ yard pieces or fat
quarters.
• 6 yards of Backing Fabric
• 1 1/2 yards of Hobbs Heirloom 80% cotton/20% poly
batting

Other Items Needed To Construct the Quilt
• 2 1/2 yards of paper-backed fusible web (like
WonderUnder)
• Thread to match all of your applique fabrics. Make
bobbins for each of the thread colors that you will be
using ahead of time. Because I use so many bobbins,
I like to keep them organized in a Bobbin Saver ring.
• Sewing Machine that has a blanket-stitch, zigzag,
blind hem or stitch, with an open-toe applique foot
• Ball-head pins
• Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
• Sharp scissors for cutting applique shapes
• Pencil and sharpener (or mechanical pencil)
• Spray starch
• Self-threading needle
• Cloth tape measure for exact placement
• For additional thread-work, you will need an opentoe
appliqué foot.
