Description

The Flora Bella Quilt finished size is 58” x 82”. It is perfect for a twin bed with a 10” drop or the top of a queen bed. Flora Bella was inspired by the Elegant Scroll fabric used for the background and borders of the quilt. This quilt is whimsical yet romantic with heart and flower motifs. Easy raw-edge fusible machine appliqué makes the quilt quick and easy. I always begin with a focus fabric, which I use to choose the additional fabrics for the quilt. The black and white canvas of the quilt lends itself to using any color variety or intensity. Have fun choosing fabrics for this quilt and making a quilt worthy to be an instant heirloom.

You will need the following materials:

Background fabric, for blocks and borders:
• 4 yards of white with black print (must be cut on the lengthwise grain of the fabric)
• 2 1/4 yards of black with white print fabric for sashing and bias binding

Each of the following fabrics should be monochromatic prints:
• ¾ yard of dark pink fabric for the Heart block scallop
• ½ yard of light pink fabric for the large Posy and Rose hearts
• ½ yard of magenta or rose fabric for sashing dots and applique motifs

For the Flowers, Heart Garlands and Millefiori applique shapes: Choose an assortment of fabrics that are monochromatic prints and/or subtle prints. The components of the blocks may take a small scrap of fabric, but since most fabric shops no longer cut 1/8 yards, I recommend purchasing ¼ yard cuts or fat quarters of the fabrics you will use.

Two each of the following colors:
• Light green, medium green and dark green fabrics
• Light purple, medium purple and dark purple fabrics
• Medium orange and dark orange fabrics
• Medium magenta or rose fabrics (this should be harmonious with the sashing dots)
• Yellow fabrics Backing and Batting: 6 yards of backing fabric 1 ¾ yards of Hobbs Heirloom 80% cotton/20% poly batting

Other items needed for quilt construction:

• 2 yards of paper-backed fusible web (like WonderUnder)
• Thread to match all of your applique fabrics. Make bobbins for each of the thread colors that you will be using ahead of time.
Because I use so many bobbins, I like to keep them organized in a Bobbin Saver™ ring.
• Sewing machine that has a blanket-stitch, zigzag, blind hem or stitch, with an open-toe appliqué foot
• Ball-head pins
• Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
• Sharp scissors for cutting applique shapes
• Pencil and sharpener (or mechanical pencil)
• Spray starch
• Self-threading needle
• Cloth tape measure for exact placement
• For additional thread-work, you will need an open-toe appliqué foot.
